About Thangkas

Thangkas are incredibly beautiful symbolic representations of the nature of mind, the true essence of our being, which is enlightenment. The origin of Thangka painting dates back hundreds of years. The intricately detailed symbolism contained within Thangkas is very profound, containing the deepest teachings within Vajrayana Buddhism and are thus used as sacred objects of contemplation and meditation. For the higher quality Thangkas the artist can take months to paint using natural mineral pigments and will meditate and visualize the image for a long time before beginning.
